A Chinese-Canadian woman suffering from empty nest syndrome gets a second shot at motherhood when one of her handmade dumplings comes alive.
This sweet short film, rich and heartwarming, is one of the first cinema products to depict the Chinese immigrant community in Canada. It’s a contemporary fairy tale with adult thematics, also innovative in its technique, in light and color rendering. The director, Domee Shi, is the first woman to direct a short film produced by Pixar.
Bao premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2018 and was screened in cinemas as a opening to Incredibles 2. It won the Oscar for Animated Short Film in 2019.
