It’s Halloween night and Renee is madly in love with Jim. On their way to a party, Jim detours to a haunted house where Renee is forced to confront a terrifying situation.
You start watching this short film with the “horror mood” ready and wonder what is going to happen to the characters when they get to the haunted house. But then, THE RAT changes into “real-life horror” and you realise that the danger is something different. The party sequence in which the protagonist, Renee, dressed as a cat, half apathetically and half shocked, looks at her boyfriend dressed as a rat is quite eloquent.
When she wakes up after the party, you just wonder what really happened during that night. A brilliant way to end THE RAT, leaving you unsure and uncomfortable. What is scary about this short film is that it’s so realistic: horror can occur in real-life relationships.
